Surf Lessons in Canggu — What to Expect
If you've never surfed before, surf lessons in Canggu are the easiest entry point in all of Bali. Batu Bolong's waves are slow, predictable and roll in from a sandy bottom — there's no reef under your feet, no heavy take-off, and no sudden close-outs. That combination is rare in Indonesia, which is exactly why thousands of first-timers choose Canggu over Uluwatu or Padang Padang each year.
A typical session with Rocky starts on the sand. We go through a 10-minute warm-up covering paddle technique, the pop-up motion and basic ocean safety — currents, where to sit, how to fall safely. Once you feel ready we paddle out together. Rocky stays with you the whole time, pushing you into the right waves at the right moment. Most beginners stand up on their first lesson; nearly everyone stands up by the end of the second.
You don't need to be fit, athletic or a strong swimmer. Comfort in waist-deep water is enough. Bring board shorts or a swimsuit, sunscreen (reef-safe please), a water bottle and a towel — everything else is included. The board you'll use is a soft-top longboard, the most stable shape on the market and the safest for both you and other surfers in the line-up. We size it to your height and weight on the day.
Lessons run year-round. Wet season (November–March) generally brings smaller, cleaner waves in the morning and is actually one of the best times for absolute beginners. Dry season (April–October) sees more crowded line-ups but bigger, punchier waves once you're past the first few lessons. Early sessions (6–9 AM) are calmer and less crowded — book the day before via WhatsApp and Rocky will confirm a spot the same evening.

Batu Bolong Beach Surf Lessons — Where to Meet
All of our Batu Bolong Beach surf lessons start right on the sand in front of Old Man's — the iconic Canggu beach bar that sits at the south end of the break. If you've never been, the easiest landmark for a surfing lesson in Canggu is the long line of surfboards stacked along the wall: that's our meeting point. Park your scooter at Old Man's lot (10K IDR for the morning), walk down the steps, and Rocky will be waiting with your board and rashguard already laid out. No need to bring anything except swimwear, sunscreen and drinking water.
Batu Bolong Beach is the most popular beginner spot on the whole island and the reason a surf lesson Canggu Bali experience is different from anywhere else in Indonesia. The reef sits 80–100 metres offshore and breaks the swell down to gentle, rolling whitewater long before it reaches you. From shore to take-off zone is a 2-minute paddle on a longboard. The sandy bottom inside the break means a wipeout costs you nothing more than a quick rinse. By contrast, almost every other surf school in Bali — Padang, Uluwatu, Bingin — operates over live reef where mistakes hurt. That single geography difference is why first-time surfers learn 2–3x faster in Canggu.
Sessions run twice daily: a sunrise slot at 6:30 AM (glassy water, very small crowd) and a morning slot at 9:30 AM (warmer, busier, better for hesitant swimmers). Afternoon lessons are possible from 3:30 PM in low season when the wind allows — message Rocky on WhatsApp the night before and he'll confirm conditions. Want the full price breakdown before booking?
