Best Surf Spots in Canggu for Intermediate Surfers (2026)

Once you've graduated from the beginner whitewash and you can paddle, drop in, and link a turn or two, Canggu opens up. Here are the five best surf spots in Canggu for intermediate surfers — when each one works, what board to bring, and which days to skip them.

Best Surf Spots in Canggu for Intermediate Surfers — At a Glance

Canggu's coastline has roughly 4 km of surfable beach, and the five named breaks all share the same swell window — but each one suits a different stage of intermediate. The short version:

  • Batu Bolong — the all-round intermediate spot. Long rides, sand bottom, mellow walls.
  • Old Man's — softer than Batu Bolong, ideal for early intermediates working on turns.
  • Echo Beach — fast, hollow, reef-bottom. Upper-intermediate territory.
  • Berawa — punchy beach break south of Old Man's. Less crowded, shifts a lot.
  • Pererenan — quietest of the five. Mixed reef-and-sand peaks, wide line-up.

If you're still working on consistent take-offs, start at Batu Bolong and Old Man's. If you're comfortable on green waves and want to push your turns harder, rotate Echo and Pererenan into your week. Brand new to Bali? My surf lessons in Canggu page covers the basics first.

1. Batu Bolong — The Default Intermediate Wave

Batu Bolong is the wave I teach 90% of my students on, beginner through intermediate, and it's also the first spot I'd send a visiting intermediate. The take-off zone is a long sandbar peak sitting in front of the reef-mouth (the "hole in the rock" the spot is named after), and the rides on a clean day stretch 80–120 metres on a single wave.

Why it works for intermediates: the wave is slow enough that you have time to set your line, stand up cleanly, and try a bottom turn or a cutback. It's not so slow that it dies on you — once you're in the open face, there's enough push to practice rail-to-rail surfing. The sand-and-reef bottom is forgiving compared to Uluwatu or Padang Padang, and wipeouts won't shred you.

When to surf it: mid-tide rising is the sweet spot for the main peak. Low tide gets shallow and the wave gets faster — fun if you're confident, sketchy if you're still learning to read sections. High tide makes the wave fat and slow but less crowded. For full conditions I keep updated on my Batu Bolong surf page.

Crowd warning: after 8am Batu Bolong becomes one of the busiest line-ups in Bali. 100+ surfers in the water on a holiday Tuesday is normal. If you hate crowds, paddle out at sunrise or shift to Pererenan.

Board: 7'0–7'6 funboard or longboard if you're working on glide and trim. Mid-length 7'2–7'10 is what most local intermediates ride here.

2. Old Man's — The Forgiving Cousin

Old Man's is 200 metres south of Batu Bolong, and the wave is named after the longboarders who've ridden it for decades. It breaks over a mostly-sand bottom with a softer shoulder than Batu Bolong, and the walls are mellower — easier to learn cutbacks on, harder to draw a tight line.

Why it works for early intermediates: if you can stand up consistently but you're still figuring out where to position on the wave face, Old Man's gives you more time to work it out. The peak shifts more than Batu Bolong, which forces you to read swell direction — a great skill-builder. There's also a left and a right going, so you get more wave-counts in a session.

When to surf it: mid to high tide is best. Low tide can close out into shore. The wave likes a 1.0–1.8 m swell from the SW; on bigger days it gets walled up and confused.

Board: longboard or mid-length. Performance shortboards usually feel sluggish here.

3. Echo Beach — The Step Up

Echo Beach is the wave most Canggu intermediates dream about and most aren't ready for. It's a fast, occasionally hollow left-and-right reef break sitting north of Batu Bolong, and on the right swell it produces some of the cleanest barrels in Canggu. On the wrong swell it produces broken boards.

Why it's upper-intermediate: the take-off is steeper, the reef is shallower, and the wave doesn't forgive late drops. You need to commit to the wave or pull back early — there's no "I'll work it out on the way down." Crowds at peak hours are also intense, with locals and pros prioritizing the inside.

When to surf it: mid-tide on a 1.5–2 m clean swell, before 9am if you're new to the spot. Watch a session from the beach first; the take-off zone is more specific than it looks. Avoid Echo on full-moon big swells unless you're confident on overhead waves.

Board: 6'6–7'0 funboard or step-up shortboard. Longboards are tolerated but you'll get burned on every set.

4. Berawa — Punchy and Underrated

Berawa sits south of Old Man's, in front of the row of beach clubs. It's a beach break with sand-bar peaks that shift week to week — sometimes there's a great A-frame, sometimes the line-up is closeouts. When it's working, it's punchier than Batu Bolong with proper open-face walls for turns.

Why it works for intermediates: Berawa rewards reading the bank. If you can identify which peak is breaking cleanest on the day, you can score waves with almost no one else on them — half the line-up is people who just paddled out without checking. It's also closer to most surf villas south of Canggu, so it's an easy second-session option.

When to surf it: low to mid tide, smaller swells (1–1.5 m). Bigger days tend to close out across the bank.

Board: 6'4–7'2 funboard or shortboard depending on the day. Versatile boards win here.

5. Pererenan — The Escape

Pererenan is 5 minutes north of Echo, just past the river mouth. It's a mix of beach break and reef sections with a wide line-up — even on busy days you can find an empty peak. The wave isn't as long as Batu Bolong but the open shoulders are great for working on turns without 30 surfers cluttering the inside.

Why it works for intermediates: wide-open peaks let you commit to your line. The lower crowd density means you actually get the practice reps you came for. The drive in is short and parking is calm compared to Batu Bolong's chaos.

When to surf it: mid-tide, 1–1.8 m swell. The reef sections show on lower tides, so be careful where you sit at low tide. Mornings only — afternoon onshores wreck Pererenan faster than the spots south of it.

Board: 6'8–7'4 funboard. Shortboards work on the punchier days.

A Sample Intermediate Week in Canggu

If you've got 5–7 days in Canggu and you want to actually progress, here's the rotation I recommend:

  • Day 1–2: Batu Bolong sunrise, focused on take-offs and one bottom turn per wave. Build the rhythm.
  • Day 3: Old Man's, work on cutbacks. Slower wave forces you to stay on the open face longer.
  • Day 4: Pererenan or Berawa, depending on swell. Practice reading peaks instead of paddling toward the crowd.
  • Day 5: Echo Beach if conditions are clean and small. If not, back to Batu Bolong with a video session — film one wave per set.
  • Day 6–7: the spot you scored best at. Repetition on the same wave beats variety once you've found one that works for your level.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I rent a board at all five Canggu spots?

Yes — Batu Bolong, Old Man's, Echo, and Berawa all have multiple rental shacks 30 metres from the water. Pererenan has fewer but at least two shops at the main entrance. Daily rentals are 80–150k IDR for funboards, 150–250k IDR for performance shortboards. Bring a hotel ID for the deposit.

Are any of these spots dangerous for intermediates?

Echo Beach over a big swell is the only one I'd actively warn intermediates off. Batu Bolong, Old Man's, Berawa, and Pererenan are all rideable for someone who can paddle confidently and duck-dive head-high waves. The biggest hazard at all five is the crowd — collisions and dropped-in waves cause more injuries than the reef.

Should I drive a scooter between spots?

All five spots are within 4 km of each other, so a scooter is the most efficient option. The roads between Berawa and Pererenan are tight and chaotic in peak season — drive defensively and check the swell forecast before leaving so you don't waste a drive on a flat spot. If you're not comfortable on a scooter, GoJek or Grab work for short hops.

What's the best month to surf Canggu as an intermediate?

May, June, September, and October are the cleanest months — dry season, consistent SW swell, predictable winds. July and August are the most popular but the most crowded. Wet season (November–March) still has surfable days, especially mornings, but expect more rain and shifting conditions. For a deeper breakdown see my best time to surf in Canggu guide.

What if I'm a beginner who thinks they're an intermediate?

Honest test: can you paddle into an unbroken green wave without a push, stand up on the open face, and ride it sideways for 5+ seconds? If yes, you're an intermediate. If you're still riding mostly whitewash, stay at Batu Bolong with a coach for a few more sessions before chasing Echo or Berawa. My beginner surf lessons in Bali page covers the bridge from foamie-rider to intermediate cleanly.

Want a Coached Session at the Right Spot?

I run intermediate sessions at all five Canggu breaks — we read the tide and swell that morning and pick the spot that fits your level. Message me on WhatsApp and tell me what you're working on (turns, take-offs, reading the wave) and I'll line up a session.
