Best Time to Surf in Canggu — Month by Month Guide
I've been surfing and teaching at Batu Bolong Beach for over 20 years. Every season brings something different. Here's my honest, practical breakdown of when to come — and when to manage your expectations.
Two Seasons: The Big Picture
Bali has two distinct seasons, and they affect surfing significantly. Understanding them helps you plan your trip with the right expectations.
Dry Season (May – October)
- →Southeast trade winds — offshore, cleaner waves
- →Best wave shape and consistency
- →Sunny, less rain
- →More tourists, higher prices
Wet Season (November – April)
- →Onshore winds — choppier surface
- →Still surfable, especially mornings
- →Afternoon rain, tropical showers
- →Fewer crowds, cheaper accommodation
The good news: Batu Bolong receives waves year-round. You can surf and take lessons in any month. The difference is mostly in wave quality and consistency — not whether there are waves at all.
Month by Month Breakdown
January – February: Wet Season, Budget-Friendly
These are the wettest months in Bali. Expect afternoon rain, sometimes heavy. Onshore winds mean the wave surface is choppier and less clean. Wave consistency can be hit-or-miss — some days are excellent, others are flat or messy.
That said, mornings can still be very good. If you're flexible and can get in the water at 7am, you'll often find decent conditions before the wind picks up. The upside: this is the low season, so accommodation and flights are cheaper, and the beach is noticeably less crowded.
Best for: Budget travelers who are flexible with their schedule and don't mind some rain.
March – April: Transition, Improving Conditions
March and April are transition months — conditions start improving as the dry season approaches. Rain decreases, winds become more favorable, and the waves get cleaner. This is an underrated time to visit: better than Jan-Feb, but without the peak season crowds and prices of June-August.
April in particular can be excellent. The swell starts filling in and the winds are often offshore even into the late morning. I personally enjoy teaching in April — the beach has a relaxed energy and conditions are reliably decent.
Best for: Travelers looking for good conditions without the crowds. Solid choice for first-timers.
May – June: Dry Season Begins — Rocky's Top Pick for First-Timers
If I had to pick the best months for someone taking their first surf lesson in Canggu, I'd say May and June without hesitation. The dry season has started, so the SE trade winds kick in and groom the waves into clean, organized swells. The surf is consistent and well-shaped. Rain is minimal. Mornings are spectacular.
Crucially, June hasn't yet hit peak tourist season. The beach is busy but not overwhelmed. You can find accommodation at reasonable prices. The lineup isn't packed with experienced surfers competing for the same waves.
Best for: First-time surfers. Great wave quality plus manageable crowds — the ideal combination.
July – August: Peak Season, Best Waves
July and August bring the best surf conditions of the year. The SE trade winds are at full strength, creating clean, powerful waves with excellent shape. If you want the most consistent, high-quality surfing Canggu has to offer, this is it.
The catch: this is also peak tourist season in Bali. The beach is crowded, prices are at their highest, and traffic in Canggu can be brutal. The surf lineup has more experienced surfers — and more competition for waves. For complete beginners, this can feel overwhelming.
My advice for peak season: book in advance, get in the water at 7am before the crowds arrive, and stick to the beginner sections of the beach rather than paddling into the main peak.
Best for: Intermediate surfers or confident beginners who can handle crowds. Book early.
September – October: Still Excellent, Crowds Thinning
This is my second top pick for first-timers. The dry season is still in full swing — waves are great, winds are offshore, and conditions are nearly as good as August. But the tourist rush has eased off. Prices come down, the beach breathes a little, and the vibe is more relaxed.
October can have the occasional early rain as the wet season approaches, but it's usually still predominantly dry and sunny. September especially is a consistently brilliant month for surfing.
Best for: First-timers who want great conditions with a more manageable crowd situation. Highly recommended.
November – December: Wet Season Returns
Conditions begin deteriorating in November as the wet season returns. Onshore winds increase, rain becomes more frequent, and wave quality drops. That said, mornings can still be decent — especially in November before the full wet season settles in.
December brings an interesting dynamic: the holiday season creates a wave of tourists despite the wet weather. You get wet season surf conditions but with Christmas and New Year's crowds. For surfing purposes, it's not ideal — but if your dates are fixed, mornings still deliver rideable waves.
Best for: Flexible travelers, or those who have no choice but to visit in December. Morning sessions are key.
Morning vs. Afternoon: Always Go in the Morning
Regardless of which month you visit, this rule applies year-round: surf in the morning. The window from 6am to 10am is when Batu Bolong is at its best.
- →Offshore winds in the morning — blowing from land to sea, smoothing and shaping the waves
- →Onshore winds from midday — blowing from sea to land, chopping up the surface and degrading wave quality
- →Fewer people early — the beach fills up through the morning. 7am is blissfully uncrowded
- →Cooler air temperature — more comfortable for a physical session before the midday heat arrives
All my lessons run at 7am for exactly these reasons. The difference between a 7am session and a 2pm session — in terms of wave quality — can be remarkable, even on a good day.
Rocky's Summary: When to Come
- Best for first-timers:May–June or September — great waves, manageable crowds
- Best waves overall:July–August — peak conditions, but crowded and expensive
- Best value:January–February or March — low season prices, decent mornings
- Hidden gem months:April and September — great conditions, fewer people
- Always surf:6am–10am, regardless of month
The honest truth: there's no bad time to learn to surf in Canggu. Even in the wet season, I teach lessons every week with happy students who stand up on their first day. The beach delivers waves year-round. The question is just about optimizing your experience.

Best Time to Surf in Bali — FAQ
What is the best time to surf in Bali?
The best time to surf in Bali is during the dry season, May through October. Southeast trade winds blow offshore, grooming the waves into clean, organized swells. July–August deliver the most powerful conditions but are also peak tourist season. For first-timers, May–June and September are my top picks — great wave quality with more manageable crowds.
What is the best time of year to surf in Bali for beginners?
For beginners, the best time of year to surf in Bali is May–June or September. These months sit inside the dry season so the waves are clean and consistent, but the lineup at Batu Bolong is not yet packed with experienced surfers competing for waves. April is an underrated transition month — conditions improve as the dry season approaches and crowds are still light.
What is the best time to surf in Indonesia?
The best time to surf in Indonesia overlaps with Bali's dry season: May to October. Southwest swells from the Indian Ocean line up with offshore SE trade winds across Bali, Java, Lombok, and the Mentawai Islands. July–September is the classic window for advanced spots; May–June and September suit beginner-friendly breaks like Batu Bolong in Canggu.
Can you surf in Bali year-round?
Yes. Batu Bolong Beach receives waves every month of the year. The wet season (November–April) brings onshore winds and afternoon rain, but mornings still deliver rideable waves — especially the 6am–10am window before the wind switches. I teach lessons every week of the year.
Is it better to surf Bali in the morning or afternoon?
Mornings, always. From 6am to 10am the winds blow offshore, smoothing and shaping the waves; from late morning the breeze switches onshore and chops up the surface. Mornings are also cooler and far less crowded. All my lessons run at 7am for exactly these reasons.
What is the worst time to surf in Bali?
December–February is the most challenging window: peak wet season brings onshore winds, frequent rain, and inconsistent wave shape. December also overlaps with Christmas and New Year crowds, so you get wet-season surf with high-season prices. If your dates are fixed in this window, plan for 7am sessions and stay flexible.
