The Lesson

What Happens in a Lesson

01

Beach Warm-Up & Safety Talk

Before your feet touch water, Rocky walks you through ocean safety, reading waves, and how to fall correctly. No rush β€” you go when you feel ready.

02

Paddling & Pop-Up on Sand

You'll practice the pop-up technique on the sand until it feels natural. Rocky fine-tunes your stance and arm position so the muscle memory is there before the waves.

03

Catching Your First Waves

Rocky gets in the water with you and pushes you into small, rolling white-water waves. He picks the right waves for your level β€” not too big, not too slow.

04

Stand Up & Ride

Most beginners stand up within the first 30 minutes. Rocky coaches from the water, giving real-time tips on balance and weight distribution every ride.

First-Timer Guide

What to Expect from Beginner Surf Lessons in Bali

Booking beginner surf lessons in Bali is the easiest way to go from never having touched a board to riding your first wave β€” often on the same day. Bali, and Canggu in particular, is one of the best places on earth to learn: the water is warm year-round, the sandy bottom at Batu Bolong Beach is forgiving if you fall, and the slow, rolling white-water waves give a first-timer the time they need to find their feet.

How many lessons does it take? Most complete beginners stand up and ride white water in their very first session. To paddle out on your own, read the line-up and catch unbroken β€œgreen” waves with some consistency, plan on three to five lessons. Everyone progresses at their own pace β€” Rocky adjusts each session to where you actually are, not a fixed script.

When should beginners come? Batu Bolong is beginner-friendly all year, but the dry season (roughly April–October) tends to bring cleaner, smaller morning waves that are ideal for learning. Early starts also mean glassier water and a quieter line-up, which makes your first surf lesson far less intimidating.

Group or private? Both work for beginners. Small group lessons are social and a little cheaper; private surf lessons give you Rocky's full attention and usually the fastest progress. If you're nervous about the ocean or learning on a short trip, private is worth it. You can compare what each option costs on the surf lesson prices in Bali page β€” beginner sessions start from 400K IDR with all gear included.

Common Questions

Beginner FAQs

Do I need to know how to swim?

Basic swimming ability is recommended. You don't need to be a strong swimmer β€” we stay in shallow water β€” but being comfortable in the ocean makes the experience more enjoyable. Rocky is a former lifeguard and your safety is always the priority.

How long until I can stand up on a wave?

Most beginners stand up on their first day. The white-water waves at Batu Bolong are slow and forgiving, which means you get plenty of attempts. Rocky knows exactly which waves to push you into.

What should I bring?

Just yourself and sunscreen. Rocky provides the surfboard and rashguard. Wear or bring a swimsuit. A towel and water are handy for after.
