How Much Does a Surf Lesson Cost in Bali? (2026 Price Guide)
I've been teaching surfing in Canggu for over 20 years. The number one question I get from travelers planning their Bali trip: "how much does a surf lesson cost?" Here's an honest breakdown — no hidden fees, no tourist traps.

Group vs. Private Lessons: Which Should You Book?
This is the most common dilemma for first-timers. The honest answer depends on your goal:
Group Lessons (3–5 people)
Group lessons are great if you're on a tight budget or traveling with friends and want a shared experience. You'll get the same beach instruction, the same equipment, and the same instructor. The difference is that in-water attention is split between multiple students — so if you fall off your board, the instructor might be helping someone else.
For most adults, this is fine on day one. You'll still stand up. The whitewash zone is very forgiving, and the instructions are clear enough that most people get it within the first hour even without constant 1-on-1 feedback.
Private Lessons (1-on-1)
Private lessons are the fastest way to learn. I watch every single wave you catch, correct your foot position, your pop-up timing, your paddling angle — in real time, while you're still in the water. The difference in progress between a first private lesson and a first group lesson is noticeable.
I particularly recommend private lessons for older beginners (40+), anyone with previous injuries, kids under 12, and anyone who feels anxious about the ocean. You get my full attention for 2 hours — nothing falls through the cracks.

What's Included in the Price?
When you book a lesson at Batu Bolong, the price covers everything you need for a complete session:
- →Surfboard — a foam longboard (soft-top), ideal for beginners. Easy to balance, light enough to carry, and much softer if it hits you
- →Rash guard — protects you from sun and board rash. Non-negotiable in the Bali sun
- →In-water instruction — I'm in the water with you the entire time, not on the beach watching through binoculars
- →Beach theory session — 20–30 minutes before entering the water. We cover how to paddle, how to pop up, how to read the whitewash, and ocean safety
- →Wave selection — I push you into the right waves so you spend your water time actually riding, not waiting and missing
What's NOT included: photos and video (available as an add-on), transport to the beach, sunscreen (bring your own — reef-safe preferred). I don't charge for parking or access to the beach.
How Bali Prices Compare to Other Surf Destinations
Bali is one of the most affordable surf destinations in the world. Here's a rough comparison for a private 2-hour lesson:
| Location | Private Lesson (2h) | Group Lesson (2h) |
|---|---|---|
| Bali (Canggu) | $60–$80 USD | $20–$30 USD |
| Gold Coast, Australia | $120–$180 AUD (~$80–$120 USD) | $60–$80 AUD (~$40–$55 USD) |
| Maui, Hawaii | $150–$250 USD | $80–$120 USD |
| Cornwall, UK | £80–£120 (~$100–$150 USD) | £35–£55 (~$45–$70 USD) |
| Lisbon, Portugal | €80–€120 (~$85–$130 USD) | €40–€60 (~$43–$65 USD) |
For most international travelers, Bali delivers better value than anywhere else: warm water (no wetsuit), consistent beginner waves year-round, experienced local instructors who've taught thousands of students — and prices that are 50–70% less than Western surf schools.
Why Location Affects the Price
Not all surf lessons in Bali are priced the same. A few factors drive the variation:
Area: Lessons in Kuta and Legian tend to be slightly cheaper because competition is higher and the area is more commercial. Canggu (including Batu Bolong) sits in a mid-price bracket — the vibe is more premium but still affordable. Uluwatu and Bukit Peninsula spots can be pricier, partly because the waves there are reef breaks, not suitable for beginners anyway.
Instructor experience: Certified instructors with 10+ years of teaching experience charge more than someone handing out boards on the beach. I've been teaching at Batu Bolong for over 20 years — that experience is reflected in the results my students get, not just in the price tag.
Booking channel: Walk-up prices on the beach can be slightly higher or come with more upsell pressure. Booking directly by WhatsApp in advance usually gets you the best rate and locks in your time slot — especially important in the morning peak hours (7–10am) when lineups are best for beginners.
I offer all my lessons out of Batu Bolong Beach in Canggu — one of the best-positioned spots on the island. If you're deciding between Canggu and other areas, my guide to surf lessons in Canggu explains exactly what makes this beach different.
How to Get the Best Value for Your Money
A few practical tips from someone who's seen thousands of first-timers come through:
- →Book a package if you have multiple days. Two or three lessons spread over your trip give you time to rest and consolidate what you learned before getting back in the water. The improvement between session one and session three is dramatic, and packages cost less per session.
- →Go private for your first lesson. If the budget allows, invest in the private lesson for day one. You'll stand up faster, learn correct technique from the start, and not pick up bad habits that are harder to unlearn later.
- →Book the morning session. 7am is the best time to surf Batu Bolong — offshore winds, clean waves, fewer people. Afternoon sessions are available but the conditions are typically worse and more crowded.
- →Ask about what's included before you pay. Some "cheap" lessons don't include a rash guard or cut the session short. Confirm: board, rash guard, 2 hours of instruction, in-water coaching.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to bring cash or can I pay by card?
Most surf instructors in Bali prefer cash (IDR or USD). I accept both, but IDR is easiest. There are ATMs a short walk from Batu Bolong Beach. You can also transfer via GoPay or OVO if you're staying longer term in Indonesia. I don't charge card processing fees — but cash is simplest.
Should I tip my surf instructor?
Tipping is not expected but always appreciated. The standard in Canggu is 10–15% for good service — the same as you'd tip at a restaurant. If your instructor pushed you into great waves, stayed patient all session, and you had a breakthrough, a tip is a kind way to acknowledge that. Never obligatory.
Are surf lessons in Bali worth it even for a short trip?
Absolutely. Even one 2-hour lesson on a 5-day trip is worth it. The conditions at Batu Bolong are consistent and beginner-friendly year-round — you don't need to get lucky with the swell. And learning to surf in 28°C water with a qualified instructor who's taught the same break for 20 years is a different experience from a cold, crowded beach school back home.
How far in advance do I need to book?
For morning slots (7–10am), I recommend booking at least 24–48 hours in advance, especially during peak season (June–August and December–January). Afternoon slots are easier to get last-minute. Message me on WhatsApp and I'll confirm availability within a few hours.
