Is Batu Bolong Good for Beginners? Everything You Need to Know
After 20 years of teaching surfing on this beach, I get this question almost every day. The short answer: yes, Batu Bolong is one of the best beginner surf spots in all of Bali — and I'll show you exactly why.
Why Batu Bolong Works So Well for Beginners
Not every beach is created equal when it comes to learning to surf. What makes Batu Bolong special is the combination of wave quality, bottom type, and water temperature — all of which work in a beginner's favor.
The waves here are a beach break, which means they break over sand rather than reef. This is a critical detail for beginners: if you fall off your board (and you will — everyone does), you're landing in sand, not sharp coral. That peace of mind makes a huge difference when you're learning.
The break produces A-frame peaks — waves that peel left and right from the peak — which gives you multiple options on every wave. As a beginner, this means more opportunities to catch a clean, open face rather than racing to beat a closing section.
Wave Conditions: What to Expect
Batu Bolong receives consistent swell year-round, with wave heights typically ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 meters. For beginners, this is the sweet spot. Waves smaller than 0.5m don't give you enough push to really feel the ride. Waves bigger than 1.5m start to become challenging — even for intermediate surfers.
Typical wave conditions at Batu Bolong:
- →Wave height: 0.5–1.5m (knee to overhead)
- →Break type: Beach break, sandy bottom
- →Shape: A-frame peaks, good left and right options
- →Consistency: Waves year-round, even in wet season
The swell at Batu Bolong comes primarily from the Indian Ocean, which means it's well-organized and not too wild. You won't find the heavy, dangerous conditions you see at spots like Uluwatu or Padang Padang — those places are for experienced surfers only.
Water Temperature: No Wetsuit Needed
One thing tourists always appreciate: Bali's water is warm. Batu Bolong sits in water that stays between 27°C and 29°C (80–84°F) year-round. You won't need a wetsuit — ever. A rash guard is all you need, and that's mainly for sun protection, not warmth.
This is a genuine comfort advantage. When you're focused on learning to stand up on a surfboard, the last thing you want is to feel cold and restricted. The warm water lets you relax, and relaxed beginners learn faster. I've seen it hundreds of times.
How Batu Bolong Compares to Other Bali Beaches
If you've been researching surf in Bali, you've probably also heard about Kuta and Seminyak. Here's how they compare from a beginner's perspective:
Batu Bolong vs. Kuta Beach
Kuta is the classic Bali beginner spot and it's fine, but Batu Bolong has some real advantages. Kuta is more crowded — it's one of the most touristy areas in Bali. The lineups (where surfers wait for waves) can be packed, which means more collisions and more stress for beginners. Batu Bolong in Canggu has a more local, relaxed vibe. The waves are also more consistent and better shaped at Batu Bolong.
Batu Bolong vs. Seminyak
Seminyak has a calmer beach overall — the waves can be quite small, especially in the wet season. That's actually good for complete beginners on day one, but it means you'll quickly outgrow it. Batu Bolong gives you more room to progress. Once you can ride whitewash, you can move to the peaks and start riding proper open-face waves — all at the same beach.
Best Time of Day to Surf Batu Bolong
I always tell my students: get in the water between 6am and 10am. Here's why:
- →Offshore winds in the morning — the wind blows from land to sea, which grooms the waves and makes them cleaner and more rideable
- →Fewer people — the beach fills up through the morning and hits peak crowds around midday
- →Cooler temperatures — Bali gets hot by midday; early morning is far more comfortable
- →Better light — softer morning sun is easier on your eyes when you're reading incoming waves
After 10am, the winds typically turn onshore (blowing from sea to land), which chops up the wave surface and makes conditions messier. It's not unrideable, but mornings are simply better. All my lessons start at 7am for this reason.
Best Tide for Beginners
Mid-tide is the sweet spot at Batu Bolong. At low tide, the water gets very shallow in some sections and the waves can close out quickly (breaking all at once rather than peeling). At high tide, the waves sometimes don't break with enough power. Mid-tide gives you the best of both: enough water depth to be safe, and waves with good shape and power to practice on.
What to Bring to Batu Bolong
- →Rash guard — essential for sun protection. Don't skip this; the Bali sun is strong even on cloudy days
- →Reef-safe sunscreen — apply before you get in the water. Reapply every 2 hours if you're out for a long session
- →Water bottle — surfing is physically demanding and you'll sweat even in the water. Stay hydrated
- →Towel and change of clothes — there are warungs (local cafes) right on the beach perfect for a post-surf breakfast
- →Cash — for parking, food, and drinks. There's an ATM nearby but smaller warungs prefer cash
If you're taking a lesson with me, I provide the surfboard and a rash guard. Just show up with sunscreen on and water to drink.
Getting to Batu Bolong Beach
The beach is located at Jl. Pantai Batu Bolong, Canggu, Bali — about 15-20 minutes north of Seminyak by motorbike or car. Most hotels in Canggu and Echo Beach area are within walking or a short ride distance. From Kuta or Seminyak, grab a Grab or Gojek (Bali's ride-hailing apps) — it'll cost around 30,000–50,000 IDR depending on traffic.
There's a small parking area and you'll immediately see the beach, the warung cafes, and the waves from the road. You can't miss it.
Ready to Surf Batu Bolong?
I've been teaching at this beach for over 20 years. I've seen students come in nervous, never having stood on a surfboard, and leave their first lesson stoked and already planning their next session. Batu Bolong makes that possible — the conditions here are genuinely beginner-friendly in a way that few beaches in Bali can match.
